Flat Earth is a Flat Lie

There is a "flat earth" theory going around on the internet. The flat earth was actually a pagan belief. Some thought it was carried on the back of an animal such as an elephant or turtle, and most thought the earth to be flat. Yet the ancient Hebrews knew better. Our prophet Isaiah wrote:

“It is He that sits above the circle of the earth...”
(Is. 40:22a).

The Hebrew word for “circle” here is KHUG (Strong’s 2329) which refers to a “circle or sphere” and is also used to describe the arched dome-like shape of the sky (Prov. 8:27; Job. 22:14).

The ancient Hebrews were well aware of this spherical shape of the earth. Additionally the book of Job told them that the earth is not sitting on the back of some animal, but is suspended in the void of space by nothing:

“He stretches out the north over the empty space,
and hangs the earth over nothing.”
(Job 26:7)

When we compare Luke (17:34-36) with Matthew (24:40-41) we see that at the instant of the return of Messiah two will be lying in one bed (Luke 17:34-36) while two will be at work in one field and two will be grinding in the mill (Luke 17:34-36 and Matt. 24:40-41). In other words the ancient Hebrews were well aware that is night and day on different sides of the planet at the same instant!

Yeshua made the statement that certain Pharisees would “compass the sea and land in order to make one proselyte” (Mt. 23:15). The Hebrew word for “compass” in the Hebrew here is SABIBOT (Strong’s 5437) meaning to circle completely around. It is the same word used in the Hebrew of Joshua (Josh. 6:3, 13, 14) to describe the children of Israel circling Jericho seven times before the walls fell. The Aramaic of Matthew has K’RAK which has the same meaning and which is the same Aramaic word the Aramaic Peshitta text of Joshua uses in these verses. Yeshua was saying that Pharisaic “missionaries” were circling the globe seeking converts all over the world.

In a recent blog I showed that the Hebrew Scriptures actually teach that the Earth is a sphere suspended from the north in empty space by nothing at all.  In that blog, I dealt strictly with what the Scriptures say about the subject.  However in addition to the Scriptures, there are many ways we can observe that the earth is a sphere, apart from viewing it from space.

Of course there are some very simple ways that we can see that the earth is a sphere.

Perhaps the simplest is that the twelve constellations of the Zodiac follow along the plane of the ecliptic in a continuous ring.

In the Northern Hemisphere this continuous ring surrounds a fixed hemisphere field of stars or star constellations.  Draco the Dragon curls around the center of this northern hemisphere of stars.  (Polaris, the North Star is about 23.4 degrees offset from this center, since the Earth's axis has a 23.4 degree tilt from the orbital plane of the ecliptic.)

In the Southern Hemisphere the constellations of the Zodiac appear upside down, and also appear as a continuous ring surrounding a fixed hemisphere field of star constellations.  The constellation Dorado the Dolphin is near the center of this southern hemisphere of stars.

Now the fact that the constellations of the zodiac appear upside down from the southern hemisphere (Australia, South Africa, South America etc.) proves that they are being viewed from the other side of the plane of the ecliptic.

Since the Zodiac forms a continuous ring and has a fixed hemisphere star field on each side of the ring, we have two complete hemispheres of stars.  Two hemispheres of stars mean two hemispheres of earth "beneath" them.  And two hemispheres form a sphere by definition.

Of course there are other ways we can see that the earth is a sphere:

The Coriolis effect causes hurricanes to spin opposite directions depending on the hemisphere from which they originate.  This is caused by the inertia of the air and sea resisting the earth's spin.

Ship masts appear as a ship approaches over the horizon before the rest of the ship, and ships sailing away disappear over the horizon before their masts do.  This can be observed by anyone using a pair on binoculars. 

One can measure the circumference of the earth using trigonometry and measuring the lengths of two shadows at the same time at two locations.

If you travel along the earth's surface and make three 90 degree turns you will eventually cross your own path making a triangle.  It is impossible to have a triangle with three 90 degree angles on a flat surface.
